Both the Jews and the Gentiles need God. All stand condemned. The Jews fully understand the way that they are supposed to live because they have the law. BUT THE LAW CAN’T SAVE! The law can teach what sin is, but it can’t keep people from sinning. In fact, the sacrificial system in the Old Testament showed that sin was a huge problem. God’s wrath against sin was temporarily satisfied by the animal sacrifices, but it wasn’t fully taken care of until the cross of Jesus Christ. Jesus fully satisfies God’s wrath (He is our “mercy seat,” 3:25) and pays the ultimate price for sin. Think of the animal sacrifices as paying for debt using a credit card (“passed over the sins previously committed,” 3:35). It takes care of the immediate problem, but you still owe! Jesus pays off the full debt by his death on the cross (3:26). We receive mercy only through Him! And that is why we can’t boast about our salvation. We didn’t earn it. It came to us through faith in Christ. Rather than discredit the law, we uphold the law by our belief, since we show the reality of sin and the need for a Savior.
2 Corinthians 9:16 “Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!“
