(15-21) We need to make sure we live for God, because he’s coming back soon! Living for Him means knowing His will. In order to know His will, or because we realize what His will is, we aren’t to be drunk. Instead, we are to be filled with the Spirit. When we are filled with the Spirit we will praise with each other, be thankful for each other, and submit to each other because that’s how Jesus wants us to be. Why do we need to submit? Because each of us has a different gift or ability, and we need to honor that reality.
(22-33) This type of submitting needs to take place in the marriage relationship as well. Each partner has a role to play as they submit to each other. Husbands are to put their wives first, just like Jesus Christ did when he died for the church. Wives are to follow the self-sacrificial leadership of their husbands. Perhaps the best summation is Paul’s own: “each one of you must also love his own wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”
Did you catch the description of what Christ did for the church here? When we hear and believe the gospel, we are made holy, blameless, and glorious (26-27). It’s all about Him, and not about us. We would be dirty, stained, and wrinkled without HIM!
