John 18-21 (The Daily Walk Bible).
What Jesus does with Peter is astonishing. First, Peter says that he will never fall away from Jesus, even if everyone else will. Next, Jesus confronts Peter with his upcoming failure. Then, Peter denies Jesus three times. Finally, Jesus challenges Peter in two ways. First his pride: “Do you give me more than these (other disciples)?” Peter refuses to say that he does, merely stating that he loves Jesus. Jesus asks him three times about his love (once for each denial), and three times Peter responds with a simple and sincere affirmation of his love!
Here we see Jesus’ compassion, love and patience on display, and it should give us hope! We aren’t perfect, and we will fail from time to time. But if Jesus deals with us the same way He does with Peter, then we can be comforted because truly “through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not” (Lamentations 3:22).
