Deuteronomy 33

As we’ve seen, it’s not unusual to have a father bless his family on his deathbed. And here, Moses, in his capacity as “father” of the nation, does the same thing. He starts with the firstborn, Reuben. Next comes the royal tribe of Judah and the priestly tribe of Levi. Rachel’s sons are next, followed by Leah’s, and the children of the handmaiden’s are last. Simeon is omitted, which is in line with Jacob’s blessing that previously predicted they would be scattered throughout Israel (Gen 49:7). It’s fitting that God is glorified at the end. After all, He brought them out of Egypt and is giving them the promised land! He has protected and provided for them. He is majestic and eternal. His glory was revealed when His angels accompanied Him in the giving of the law (33:2; Acts 7:53). He is their God!
