With the large number of people present, there needed to be a way to account for them in an orderly fashion. Here we see how they camped, and in chapter 10 we see how they marched. The camp displays something physically that they should know spiritually: God is literally in their midst!

Thought for the day: While we understand that God is currently with us spiritually through the Holy Spirit, the camp arrangement is a foreshadowing of something that will one day be literally true again.
