Proverbs 2:16-22 “to deliver you from the adulterous woman, from the loose woman who has flattered you with her words; who leaves the husband from her younger days, and has ignored her marriage covenant made before God. For she has set her house by death, and her paths by the place of the departed spirits. None who go in to her will return, nor will they reach the paths of life. So you will walk in the way of good people, and will keep on the paths of the righteous. For the upright will reside in the land, and those with integrity will remain in it, but the wicked will be removed from the land, and the treacherous will be torn away from it.”
Verse sixteen is a continuation of the thought begun in verse 11: “discretion will protect you, understanding will guard you…to deliver you.” The advice here is that given by a father to a son. Why does he specify adultery? Maybe because of the increased damage that can happen to relationships as a result of adultery, or maybe because that is where temptation lies. A married woman may only be looking for a dalliance, not a commitment. And if she gets pregnant, the baby is easily explained! But if it ever comes to light, watch out! However, the passage should serve as a warning to both men and women about sexual immorality. Where does sex belong? Within a marriage relationship! We break covenant with God and our partner when we engage in sex outside of marriage (17).
1 Corinthians 6:18-20 “Flee sexual immorality! … Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.”
1 Corinthians 7:2 “But because of immoralities, each man should have relations with his own wife and each woman with her own husband.”
Galatians 5:19-21 “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
Wise people, godly people, will walk in the way of good instead. They will follow right paths, and good things will happen. Not only because of God’s blessing, but because that’s the truth of wisdom. Adultery and sexual immorality can affect us emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and possibly physically (18-19). Of course our lives will be better if we stay away from them! And that’s the secret of Proverbs and godly wisdom in general. God doesn’t have to say “gotcha” and punish us when we do something wrong. The world is already set up to punish foolishness and reward wisdom, so be wise!
