2 Timothy 2

Paul gives specific guidelines for Timothy here:

  • Be strong, and pass on what you’ve learned.
  • Be faithful in suffering. A willingness to endure suffering comes from knowing Jesus and understanding the blessings of salvation. He gives us life! We experience honor and glory in Him! He never leaves us or forsakes us! Don’t deny Him! We need Him!
  • Be single minded in your devotion. Be like a soldier, athlete, or farmer. Put God first.
  • Because you are His, you are set apart for his purpose. Which means, “keep away from youthful passions, and pursue righteousness, faithfulness, love and peace, in company with others who call on the Lord from a pure heart” (2:22).
  • Warn others of the dangers of dissension.
  • Don’t get caught up in fads or controversies based on lies and misunderstandings. Focus on the truth!
  • Don’t be angry and argumentative, especially in rebuke. Be gentle towards those who disagree. They may one day turn into your best friend!

Verse 22 has an important reminder. We become better together. One of the ways we increase in righteousness, faithfulness, love and peace is by being a part of a community that is committed to serving God. We all need the challenge and companionship that comes from being a part of a local church!
