Paul’s second letter starts out by thanking God for the Thessalonians ongoing perseverance in the face of persecution (3-4). Their ability to prevail in the midst of affliction is “evidence of God’s righteous judgment” (5). He is supporting and sustaining them! Their current endurance shows their future worthiness for the kingdom and their upcoming rest (7), which is in stark contrast to the destruction of the wicked who are persecuting them (8-9). And here we see the true nature of hell: “eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his strength.” Paul finishes by reminding them of his prayers for their spiritual maturity (11-12).
What a blessing to know God’s sustaining power in the midst of affliction and persecution! What a blessing to know the hope of a glorious future!
