Colossians 2

(1-5) Paul cares about them even though he hasn’t met them. He wants them to be unified, encouraged, and have full understanding and assurance. Only then will they be able to resist false teachers.

(6-15) Paul warns them not to allow anyone to deceive them. Christ is Lord and God! They have been filled in Him (through the Spirit), and their spiritual circumcision is expressed by the ordinance of baptism. Their old selves have been buried in Christ, and they have been made alive through His resurrection! He took their sins and nailed them to the cross, and at the same time destroyed all opposition that stands against them!

(16-23) There are false teachers in the church. Some are legalists who claim that they need to keep the law in order to be saved. Some are spiritualists who see visions and worship angels. Some practice asceticism and don’t touch or eat certain things. Paul reminds the church that they don’t need to keep the law to be saved, nor should they follow human thought or philosophy. They only need to follow Christ!

The warning for us is clear: it’s all about Jesus. He is the only way to be saved. He is the only one we follow. When others try to claim there is more to do for our salvation, or claim that Jesus is less than Lord and God, we need to recognize them for what they are: false teachers.
