This passage reveals a difficult truth: God hates sin and will punish it.
People’s unwillingness to worship and follow God is especially grievous to Him because He has revealed Himself to mankind through His creation, as Psalm 19 reveals:
Psalm 19:1-4 “The heavens declare the glory of God; the sky displays his handiwork. Day after day it speaks out; night after night it reveals his greatness. There is no actual speech or word, nor is its voice literally heard. Yet its voice echoes throughout the earth; its words carry to the distant horizon. In the sky he has pitched a tent for the sun.“
By ignoring God people fall deeper and deeper into sin and idolatry. They worship self. They worship sex. They end up completely depraved and they face God’s judgment. But there is warning here for believers too: we are not to approve of those who live like that (1:31)! And this is why it’s so hard to be a Christian in today’s society. People get very angry if you disagree with what they do or how they live. Nothing short of full acceptance is deemed appropriate, no matter how kind or loving you try to be. Perhaps the words of the apostles can strengthen our resolve:
Acts 5:29 “But Peter and the apostles replied, ‘We must obey God rather than people.’“
