Luke 21:24 is an interesting verse for those who believe in two separate fulfillments in this section: “Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.” Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed in AD 70. Although Jerusalem has been rebuilt, only parts of Israel have been restored and the temple is still gone. It’s entirely possible to see our entire age since then as the “times of the Gentiles,” or the “last days.”
Acts 2:16-17 “But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel: ‘And in the last days it shall be,’ God declares…”
The coming of the Son of Man shall be undeniable, but the time is unknown. There will be signs leading up to it however, and believers should be able to discern them, assuming we are living properly! Our job is to pray and serve while we wait, and verse 34 serves as a somber warning for us: “But be on your guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life.”
