The Pharisees ask Jesus a question. They are looking for a physical kingdom and want to know when it will arrive. Jesus tells them that the kingdom has already arrived, it’s just invisible! Jesus then gives His own disciples some insight into the coming physical kingdom:
- They will long for a visible kingdom (22).
- It will be obvious when it happens (24).
- The cross and rejection will come first (25)
- It will be a time of judgment (26-30).
- It will come suddenly (31-35).
- There is only one way to escape judgement (33).
Matthew 16:24-25 “Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will find it.'”
The disciples want to know where this judgment will occur. Perhaps they think that they will be alive when it happens and they want to make sure they are there when Jesus returns! Jesus lets them know that, when it happens, no one will miss it: “where the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.”
Today, if we believe in Jesus, we are blessed to be a part of His spiritual kingdom. We are, however, looking for that physical kingdom. It’s still coming! We haven’t missed it (2 Thessalonians 2:2)! It will be unavoidable and undeniable when it happens.
