2 Samuel 8-10 (The Daily Walk Bible).
Jonathan and David had a friendship for the ages. 1 Samuel 20:17 reminds us of their friendship: “And Jonathan made David swear again by his love for him, for he loved him as he loved his own soul.” It was a friendship that even caused Saul to try to kill his own son (1 Samuel 20:33)!
Here we see that their friendship even transcended death: “One day David began wondering if anyone in Saul’s family was still alive, for he had promised Jonathan that he would show kindness to them.”
It is a special blessing to have a friendship like that. Not only the closeness in life, but the kind of bond that endures so that family continues to be important. Have you ever known a friendship like that? Where perhaps a friend continues to look out for a deceased friend’s brother, sister, or other family member? I think that something like that is incredibly rare…
