1 Samuel 16-19 (The Daily Walk Bible).
Saul is the embodiment of Proverbs 14:30. “A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.” Watch out for jealousy, because it will destroy you!
David is a good example of someone who is doing what God wants, but still faces persecution. Don’t think that nothing bad can ever happen to you simply because you follow God. God’s higher purpose for your life can entail significant suffering. The way you respond shows the world the strength you get from your relationship with Him. “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
Saul’s story reminds me of what God says to the church of Ephesus: “Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent, and do the works you did at first. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place, unless you repent” (Revelation 2:5).
